Book your Rabbit's Holiday today
As a caring rabbit owner, you want to ensure your furry friend is happy and healthy. A crucial part of their diet is hay. Often overlooked, hay is more than just a filler; it’s an essential component that contributes significantly to your rabbit's overall well-being.
Why is Hay So Important?
Dental Health: Rabbits' teeth continuously grow throughout their lives. Chewing on hay helps to naturally wear down their teeth, preventing dental issues that can lead to pain and infection.
Digestive Health: Hay is a great source of fiber, which is vital for a healthy digestive system. It helps to maintain a balanced gut flora and prevents conditions like hairballs.
Nutrient Intake: Hay provides essential nutrients, including vitamins, minerals, and protein. It's a natural source of nutrition that complements other dietary components.
Mental Stimulation: Chewing on hay provides mental stimulation, keeping your rabbit occupied and reducing boredom.
How Much Hay Should My Rabbit Eat?
Your rabbit should have unlimited access to hay. It should always be available in a clean, dry hay feeder.
What Type of Hay is Best?
Timothy Hay: This is a popular choice and is suitable for most rabbits. It's high in fiber and low in sugar.
Meadow Hay: This is a good option for rabbits who need more calories, such as growing kits or older rabbits. It's higher in protein and calories than timothy hay.
Oat Hay: This is a treat hay and should be given in moderation. It's higher in sugar and calories than timothy or meadow hay.
Tips for Encouraging Hay Consumption:
Fresh Hay: Ensure the hay is fresh and free of mold or dust.
Clean Feeder: Regularly clean the hay feeder to remove debris and encourage your rabbit to eat.
Variety: Try different types of hay to keep your rabbit interested.
Enrichment: Provide hay in different ways, such as in a hay ball or a puzzle feeder.
By providing your rabbit with plenty of high-quality hay, you're taking a significant step towards ensuring a long and healthy life. Remember, a happy rabbit is a healthy rabbit!

Some of my Hay Recommendations
Hay your way has a great reputation for providing high quality hay around the country. They are based in Wicklow but will shop anywhere on the islan for approx €7. Definitely one I would recommend for your buns.
Based in NI, Nibble & Gnaw is not as well known as others but is providing equally high quality hay. They are a little more expensive but have more ready available stocks than some so it is a good 2nd choice for your buns.
This hay is definitely my go to emergency hay and sometimes even just an alternative to prevent boredom. It is a Maxi Zoo own brand but I find that this Organic Premium Meadow Hay is fantastic even for picky buns!
Any seasoned rabbit owner knows Burgess and how great their products are. I find this hay a nice premium product for a Timothy hay when the top picks aren't available. It should be available in all good pet shops.
